Glossary

Lodge Number

Lodge numbers shown throughout the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database are identical to those shown in the records of the United Grand Lodge of England.

There are some instances, for early (low numbered) Lodges where identical numbers appear on the database. See the section on View Record Details for a brief explanation.

Lodge Name

The Lodge Name shown throughout the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database follows the same conventions as the Masonic Year Book.

Except where otherwise stated, the word Lodge follows after the title.

For example, 'Neptune' refers to 'Neptune Lodge' whereas 'Lodge of Emulation' already has Lodge in the title.

Jurisdiction

The United Grand Lodge of England Roll is shared amongst a series of jurisdictions. The largest of these is London with approximately 20% under its control. All other Lodges come under either Provincial Grand Lodges, District Grand Lodges or Lodges under Grand Inspectors. There are a very small number of Lodges abroad which are not under District Grand Lodges or Grand Inspectors.

Lodges shown as 'Unattached' indicate a Lodge abroad administered direct from Freemasons' Hall in London.

Throughout the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database, the jurisdictions shown refer to those identified in the Masonic Year Book published annually by the United Grand Lodge of England.

Where Lodges have been deleted from the Register (or Roll) of the United Grand Lodge of England, the name of the Province or District applicable when it was erased is shown unless it is now under another Jurisdiction when the name of that Grand Lodge is indicated.

Records for Lodges deleted prior to 1869 do not show a Jurisdiction.

Deleted from Grand Lodge Roll Indicator

Where a Lodge has been erased or deleted from the Register (or Roll) of the United Grand Lodge of England, it is shown with an indicator ('X') to the left of the Lodge Number on the View Chart Details and Print Chart Details options and is shown in the appropriate boxes on the View Record Details form.

Additionally, where a colour monitor is being used, all text is turned red to immediately indicate that the Lodge has been deleted.

Grand Lodge Chart Number

The Chart reference numbers used throughout the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database have been selected to correspond with records held at Grand Lodge. This is to facilitate easier research for Lodge historians at the Grand Lodge Library and Museum.

The only exceptions to this are special charts designated "001" through "007". For ease of reading due to the more comprehensive notes, these have been sub-divided where necessary. For example, chart "002" in Grand Lodge records has been sub-divided into charts "002/1" and "002/2".

Generation within the 'Family'

The generation within the Family is primarily used within the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database to facilitate automatic drawing of the Family Tree Charts.

It is included in the View Record Details, View Chart Details and Print Chart Details options for completeness and may be of interest to some historians.

Date of Warrant or Constitution

The Date of Warrant or Constitution is the date permission was granted by the Most Worshipful the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England for a new Lodge to be formed.

It should be remembered that a Lodge may be Consecrated some time after the Warrant or Constitution was granted. Therefore, the year of Consecration may be different to the year shown.

Notes

Comprehensive and expanded notes are included where applicable to avoid the Lodge historian or researcher from referring to other documents. As an example, where a Lodge has been sponsored in conjunction with another Lodge, the name of that Lodge, its number and Jurisdiction are shown in full.

Number of Mother Lodge

The number of the Mother Lodge refers to the Lodge which was the primary sponsor of the subject Lodge. Lodge numbers shown throughout the Cross Reference and Family Tree Database are identical to those shown in the records of the United Grand Lodge of England.

There are some instances, for early (low numbered) Lodges where identical numbers appear on the database. See the section on View Record Details for a brief explanation.

Similarly, there are some instances where the number of the Mother Lodge is higher than the subject Lodge. Once again, this is restricted to early (low numbered) Lodges.
